Historical Background of Alwar
The history of Alwar dates back to the Mahabharata period. Formerly known as Mewat, Alwar was once a powerful Rajput state. Though susceptible to external invasions thanks to its proximity to Delhi, it was well protected by its soldiers and inhabitants who were the epitome of sacrifice and chivalry. In fact, Alwar grew in influence so much that it raided the armies of the Delhi Sultanate. Finally crushed by Sultan Balban (1267 A.D - 1287 A.D) of the Slave Dynasty, Alwar was incorporated into the Delhi Sultanate.
In 1771 A.D, Alwar was brought under the control of the Hindus by Maharaja Pratap Singh, a Kuchhwaha Rajput who founded a principality of his own. The principality was known as Mewat.
