Introduction
An ancient city, Bhubaneswar is home to about 500 temples, making it an important center of pilgrimage. Added to this the city is the capital and commercial hub of the eastern state of Orissa, India. Bhubaneshwar is characterized by some of most artistic and engineering feats achieved in the field of architecture like the temples of Lingaraj, the Mukteswar, and the Parsurameswar in the ancient times. Bhubaneshwar has the distinction of being one of the three destinations on the Golden Triangle itinerary of eastern India, the other destinations being Puri and Konark in Orissa, India.

Among the most famous temples of Bhubaneswar are the Lingaraj temple, the Mukteswar temple, the Parsurameswar temple and the Rajarani temple. The most mature state of Orissa architecture find its fullest expression in the Lingaraj Temple dominating the skyline of the city. Built in 650 AD, the Parsurameswar temple is probably the oldest surviving temple in Bhubaneswar. The Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore has said about the temples of the city - "At all places where the eye rests, and also at places where the eye does not rest, the busy chisel of the artist has worked incessantly. The abode of god has been enveloped by a variety of figures depicting the good and the evil, the great as well as the insignificant, the daily occurrences of human life…". The architectural splendors of these structures make the travel to Bhubaneswar a memorable experience. Also not to be missed is the eclectic State Museum of Bhubaneswar which has a large and wonderful collection of archaeological artifacts, palm - leaf paintings, ancient weapons, local arts and crafts.
