Introduction

Historical Background of Jodhpur
Jodhpur's historical importance lies in the fact that it is at least 500 years old. The Rathore Rajputs dominated this region. In the yesteryears Jodhpur was a part of the ancient state of Marwar. King Rao Jodha is said to have build the city of Jodhpur on the desert sands known as the Maru Mandal.
Jodhpur has a rich cultural heritage. This was the seat of the Rajput royalty. The kings sponsored art forms such as, handicrafts, folk dance and folk music.
Tourist Attractions in Jodhpur
Tourist attractions in Jodhpur include historical sites such as the, Baba Ramdeo temple, Ganesh mandir, Shanishchar Ji ka than, the Jain temples of Ranakpur and most importantly the Sun temple. Jodhpur has the famous Umed palace that is also a tourist attraction.
There is an ancient step well that is a major tourist attraction. The Sun temple is divided into three parts, a portico, hall and a shrine. This temple does not have any idol as such, though there are sculptures of several deities and there is a beautiful sculpture of the Sun God, Surya.
The ancient step well is situated behind the Sun temple and is a must visit for its architectural beauty.
The Baba Ramdeo temple is an interesting work of architecture. On a rock right outside the entrance of the temple in an inscription that says enter at ones own risk.
The Umed palace was constructed on Chittar hills by Maharaja Umed Singh.
