Introduction
A small national park on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the Kaziranga National Park in Assam has an area of around 450 sq km. It has swamps and tall elephant grass making it the ideal habitat for the Indian one-horned Rhino.
Kaziranga in Assam, India is perhaps one of the last homes of the one-horned rhino. In fact the authorities have made extra efforts to maintain and conserve the vast forests of Kaziranga and to keep it safe from poachers to be able to boost the rhino population in India and Asia.
Historical Background of Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga was first established as a reserve forest in the year 1908 and was subsequently given the status of a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1974. Kaziranga in Assam, India was designated as a world heritage site in the year 1985.

Besides the Rhino, the park has Elephants, Bison, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats, Otters, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons, Wild Boar, Jackal, Wild Buffalo, Pythons, Monitor Lizards, and many more species of animals.
Among the birds, there are the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black-Kite, Brahminy Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, and a number of migratory birds, which visit the park during winters.
The lowland plains make wildlife viewing in the Kaziranga National Park easy. All you have to do is leave in the early hours of the morning for an elephant ride into the jungles.
On the way to Kaziranga, you can visit the tea plantations at Karbi Anglong. The best time to visit the park is between mid-November and early April. During the monsoons, it is almost impossible to see animals, since the Brahmaputra River is in spate and floods the low-lying grasslands.
