Introduction
Kodaikanal is a hill station located over an area of 21. 45 kilometers and lies at an altitude of 2,133 meters above the sea level. Kodaikanal lies at a distance 120 kilometers from Madurai. It is situated on the Palni hills on the Western Ghats.
Historical Background of Kodaikanal
The earliest people who lived in the Kodai hills were the Paliyans who were the aborgines of the Palani Hills and were followers of the Tamil Culture.
Tourist Attractions in Kodaikanal
There is a naturally star shaped lake in Kodaikanal where tourists can go boating and fishing. The Kodaikanal Boat Club organizes boat races. The Bryant Park is another tourist attraction, especially for its beautiful blooms, grafting and hybrids.
Kodaikanal has a number of picturesque parks, such as the Coaker's walk and the Priest's walk. Other tourist spots are the Pillar Rocks, Bear Shola falls and the Glen waterfalls. There are two telescope houses that have been constructed in these hills to help tourists have a glimpse of the entire region from a height.
Another important and interesting tourist attraction is the Kurinji Andavar temple.
Miscellany
Kodaikanal is famous for a rare bloom of the Kurinji flower that apparently blooms once in 12 years. The last time Kurinji blossomed was in the year 1992.
