Historically the city of Mumbai is associated with fishermen. Mumbai and the islands around it formed a part of the ancient Magadhan empire. At some point of time in history the Portuguese took over.

Tourist attractions in Mumbai include beaches, health resorts, historical sites and hot springs. Among the historical sites the Gateway of India is worth visiting. Other sites include the Gandhi memorial and Mani Bhawan.

As far as the cultural heritage is concerned the locals here speak the Marathi language and worship the Goddess Mumbadevi. Maharashtra has a tradition of folk theater and dance forms. Those artists who it is believed are the descendants of Lord Krishna perform the Vasudev dance form. Local Marathi women perform the traditional lavni music. The traditional Marathi Theater popularly known, as tamasha, is an important part of the Maharashtrian culture.
