Historical Background of Pushkar

Pushkar is of great historical importance and it is believed that the Pushkar Lake was actually created by the deity Lord Brahma. In fact Pushkar is the only city in India that has a temple that is dedicated to Lord Brahma.

Pushkar has a rich cultural heritage. The famous Pushkar fair is held every year on Kartik Purnima and this tradition has been going on for time immemorial. Pushkar is popular for its folk dance and folk music.

Tourist Attractions in Pushkar

Pushkar offers several tourist attractions for visitors. There are around 400 temples in Pushkar; some of these are the temple of Brahma, the Savitri temple and the 12th century Apteshwar temple dedicated to lord Shiva. Besides these there is the traditional animal fair or the Pushkar mela and the 52 bathing ghats around the Pushkar Lake. The Brahma temple lies in the Pushkar valley. According to legend Lord Brahma along with some other deities performed a holy ritual in this temple. The Savitri temple is situated behind the temple of Brahma.

Miscellany

The Pushkar fair is held every year on Kartik Purnima. There is a cattle bazaar where apart from camels other domestic animals are bought and sold. This fair is also popular for its traditional entertainment options, such as the tug-of-war competitions, juggling and camel rides.
