Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur
The Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur, the last of few palaces in India, is also famed as one of the largest private residences in the world. Named after its patron, Maharaja Umaid Singh, the Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur is set in the middle of 26 acres of sprawling gardens and was conceived as the famine relief project.
Because of the use of the locally available Chittar sandstone, this palace is also called as the Chittar Palace. Built between 1929 and 1943, 3000 laborers and artisans were employed to complete the 347-room palace. Henry Vaughan Lanchester, an Edwardian architect, designed the Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur in the prevailing Art Deco style of that time and it took 15 years to complete the construction work of the palace.
The Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur is an interesting piece of architecture where east meets the west in pleasing manner. The dome, 105 ft high, shows Renaissance influence while the towers are built in typical Rajput style. The most appealing things to admire in the Umaid Bhawan Palace are the Billiards Rooms, Central Rotunda, Indoor Swimming Pool, Private Museum, Squash Court, Tennis Court, Throne Room and Wood-Paneled Library. The Private Museum within the Umaid Bhawan Palace exhibits the superb personal collection of the Maharaja Umaid Singh and his successors such as the clocks, a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria, stuffed elephants and weapons. The Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur was converted into a luxury heritage hotel and is looked after by the Taj Group of Hotels. A part of the palace is still retained by the present Maharaja Gaj Singh II as his personal residence.
